What is responsible for roughly three quarters of the food crops you eat? It's the honey bee.
This week on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, Master Gardener and KUCI staff host Katrina Kirkeby and her guest, fellow Master Gardener Karine Pouliquen tell you all about the importance of bees.
Commercially, they are trucked to farmer's fields to help pollinate the crops. At home, find out what it takes to maintain a safe environment for native bees and also, how to raise them in your own backyard apiary. As a matter of fact, this month is the time to order your queen for the hive!

/h4>/h2>/h3>/h2>This week on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, we are revisiting the subject of Coyotes. The growing incidents of human/coyote conflicts exhibit a need to discuss ways of measuring and then managing for the coexistence of the urban homeowner/gardener and the now urban coyote populations.
KUCI Staff host and MG Katrina Kirkeby talks with Dr. Niamh Quinn, the current UC Cooperative Extension Advisor, for the full hour about coyotes. If you have concerns for your small children and pets in the presence of coyotes, you should know about a remarkable new interactive service that is available on the MG website.
It's called “Coyote Cacher”. You can find it here at https://ucanr.edu/sites/CoyoteCacher/. You can sign up for coyote encounter email alerts, report sightings, and see on maps just where the reports have occurred and the level of encounter from simple sightings on up to dangerous/tragic results. Tune in and learn more from Katrina and the lovely Dr. Quinn! Also, learn about an upcoming online course on Gardening for Butterflies for which you can register.

/h4>/h2>/h3>/h2>This week on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, we have a twofer for you! Both topics are relevant for this time of year.
One topic is Bareroots. UCCE Master Gardener and KUCI staff host Teena Spindler will speak with Gary Matsuoka, a local nurseryman, about one of the most time-sensitive task in the winter garden - planting bareroot nursery material.
Now is that time once again and you'll hear what it takes to successfully plant and grow plant material which is sold, not in pots, but wrapped in plastic with limited moisture-retaining media. Proper planning is important so get your helpful hints here before venturing out to the garden center. Plus Mark Fierle talks with Certified Square-foot Garden teacher Daniel Abair. Learn how to grow in raised beds using the square-foot gardening techniques. This novel concept of gardening was developed by Mel Bartholomew. Imagine how to get all the harvest of typical row gardening in just 20% of the space!
