4H Office, from 10am - High Noon.
The theme for the next County Fashion Revue is:
The Wild West in Fashion
Categories: Traditional, Embellished, Recycled, Purchased, Quilted, State Challenge, County Challenge, Needle Art, Textile. (you may enter up to one outfit per category)
Recycled, Quilted, County Challenge, Needle Art and Textile categories do not go on to state.
These are the State Fashion Revue Challenge categories:
2 Yard Wonder: using a 2 yard length of 100% cotton fabric, 44/45” wide, sew a garment and an accessory. You can use less fabric but not more for the garment and accessory. There is no specific pattern requirement. Additional garments to complete the outfit may be sewn or purchased. Take a “before” photo of the member holding the piece of fabric and an “after” photo wearing the outfit. The entry must be sewn by the member as part of his/her 4H Clothing & Textiles project.
Duct Tape Challenge: Create a wearable garment out of duct tape such as a jacket, shirt, pants, skirt or dress. The member may choose to begin with a purchased garment or not. Additional garments, accessories, fabric and materials may be added.
At this workshop we will be handing out 2 yards of fabric for the County Challenge category. If you plan on entering this category then you will need to be at the workshop to pick up the fabric.
It will not be available after the workshop, so if you can’t make the workshop, then have some one pick it up for you.
We will let you know the exact date of the County Fashion Revue at the workshop and we will also have the entry forms available.

4-H Presentations
Believe it or not it’s not too soon to be thinking about Sonoma County Presentation Day! Sonoma County’s Presentation Day is scheduled for Saturday, February 2, 2013. All members are encouraged to participate!
What is a 4-H presentation?
A presentation is a method used to communicate an idea by showing and/or telling. It can be a demonstration or a talk that uses posters and other visual aids. A 4-H Presentation helps you learn to:
- Research a subject
- Organize ideas in a logical order
- Be a teacher and practice public speaking skills
Why do a 4-H presentation?
As you participate in projects, you collect information and ideas that can be shared with others. This sharing of information is part of the process of learning. Teaching project skills in a presentation takes advanced skills and a deeper understanding of what you have learned.
By giving presentations you learn more, gain recognition and obtain important communication skills activities for your record book! You have the opportunity to do presentations at project meetings, club meetings and at County Presentation Day.
Presentations are required for you to earn your Stars in the 4-H Program.
What do I do?
Speakers prepare for presentations by giving talks to project groups and community club meetings, practicing skills learned in a project, and observing other people giving presentations. You can get ideas for presentations from many different sources. The first place to start is with your project leaders. They know what you have learned in your project and what you might enjoy presenting. Your community club leader also can be a source of ideas.
Presentations are not just demonstrations. You have many options ranging from traditional demonstrations to problem solving for senior members. All of the various presentation styles require similar skills, but are designed to meet the interests and age-appropriate levels of the member. No style of presentation is better than any other. Choose the style that best fits you for your first presentation and then try other styles as you advance in 4-H.
Every 4-H member is encouraged to give a presentation each year. Show what you've learned; give a presentation!
Visit http://www.ca4h.org/Projects/Leadership/PublicSpeaking to learn more and to find the 4-H Presentation Manual.
How Do I Register?
Registration is simple and takes only a few minutes. Visit the county 4-H website at http://cesonoma.ucanr.edu/Youth_Development/ to register online before January 25, 2013 or complete a registration form and mail it no later than January 21, 2013. You will receive a confirmation e-mail or letter.
Dear 4-H Clubs and Projects,
Attached is the new 4-H Center Booking Policy. Please review the new booking policy and feel free to contact us with any questions and concerns at the 4-H Foundation office 707-584-9284.

Junk Drawer Robotics
The Junk Drawer Robotics curriculum engages middle school youth (ages 10-13) in understanding scientific concepts and processes, the engineering design process cycle, and technology creation and building. Junk Drawer Robotics provides youth these experiences by working with household items to complete simple design challenges. These robotics activities emphasize science, engineering and technology process skills, cross-age instruction (teenagers-as-teachers), the experiential learning cycle, and small group learning. Activities are designed to be led by an adult or teen facilitator.
Hope to see you there! Judy

CLUB LEADERS>>>IMPORTANT…Please open up attachment below. It is a “VEC (volunteer enrollment coordinator) Help Sheet” for online enrollment. This is hot off the press from the State. Please print it out and use it as a step by step guide. It would be VERY, VERY helpful if this is followed BEFORE registration comes to the office. Our part-time secretary is backed up with registration, because she has had to return so many incomplete documents. We realize the online system is often confusing and we have been requesting training for over a year.
The State has heard us loud and clear and has developed this sheet, just for YOU! And will have video trainings in the near future.

From the Chickenque Committee,
We are already busy planning for the 2013 Sonoma County 4-H Chickenque and our first items of business is the T-shirt drawing contest. It was a huge success last year and our goal is to get the information out earlier, leaving no one out. We want to encourage every youth to participate, so be creative and submit a drawing.
Our goal is to better our communication and rally the volunteers. We are proud of the changes we made and are looking forward to higher attendance, more club participation and new volunteers.
Please considering being a part of this great committee. We are looking for a few good volunteers. If you're interested, contact Matt Schafer at matt@firetriangle.com.
Thank you for being a part of this amazing event!

Free horses to a good home
I have 2 horses that I no longer use.
I used to do 4-H many years ago and know that some kids might be wanting or needing a project horse. Is there a way you can put the word out to some families to see if they would like them? They would be free to a 4-H family only. They do need work; I haven't been able to be active with them for about a year. One horse is a broke Buckskin Quarter Horse Gelding, he's registered, beautiful and about 9 years old. I adore him and ONLY want him to go to someone he will be loved like crazy by. The second is a little paint mini-horse, who has been my QH's company. He can go free too, only to a loving home. Thank you for your help and time.
