I've noticed over the years that by the end of August, gardeners like myself, and sometimes their gardens too, often reach a state of sticky, sweaty, overheated and aphid-covered exhaustion.
There is a reason, after all, that so much of our native plant and animal communities evolved summer dormancy to some degree. It's a rough time of year to be mostly made of water.
But don't despair -- we can learn a lesson from our native ecology, and take some time to rest. Especially now as the Autumn equinox nears, calling us back into balance after the long, bountiful summer days.
Taking a moment to pause, and sit down for a meal with friends, gives us the opportunity to celebrate the bounty of our summer gardens, delight in the life that abounds around us, tell stories from past years, and dream together about winter gardens, wildflowers, and next year's plantings.
The Turlock Community Garden will be hosting a fall harvest potluck on Saturday September 24 from 5pm to sunset. It's a chance for gardeners and guests to rest, celebrate, and dream. Bring a dish to share, and if possible, bring a chair, and your own reusable, plate, utensils, and water bottle.
Anna Hazen is the Garden Manager for Turlock Community Gardens. She loves nothing more than to sit against a tree and rest in the exuberant diversity of life all around us.
