Last week I attended the Western Society of Weed Science annual meeting (Spokane, WA). Joe DiTomaso and I were invited to speak in an Education and Regulatory Symposium entitled "Use of New Technology by Weed Science Educators" and I thought I'd share a few thoughts about the session and also my presentation on blogs.
This interesting symposium organized by Marvin Butler from Oregon State University had four speakers plus time for discussion.
First, James Leary from the University of Hawaii at Manoa spoke about "The Virtual Field Day (VFD): Web-based video presentations that extend to a broader audience". He discussed his use of low cost, self edited YouTube...

A quick post today on a recent report of resistance to glufosinate, the active ingredient in Rely herbicide (also sold as Liberty, Ignite, Basta, etc in other markets).
Researchers in Malaysia reported a few years ago on a population of goosegrass resistant to glufosinate in vegetable and orchard systems (Lee L J & Ngim J (2000). A first report of glyphosate-resistant goosegrass (Eleusine indica (L) Gaertn) in Malaysia. Pest Management Science, 56, 336-339). For a number of years this was the only reported case of resistance to this herbicide.
At a meeting last month, I saw a presentation by Wilson Avila and Carol Mallory-Smith from Oregon...

Earlier this month, I attended the 2011 Plant and Soil Conference which was held in Fresno this year. This annual meeting put on by the California Chapter of the American Society of Agronomy (http://calasa.ucdavis.edu/ ) usually has several sessions during the two-day program designed to update Certified Crop Advisors, Pest Control Advisors, and other professional agronomists on current research and regulatory issues. One of the speakers in the Environmental Quality Session, Pam Wofford from CDPR, spoke about reducing emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) from pesticides by switching formulations. I thought I’d touch on that issue today.
There are a number of definitions of...

Today I thought I would post a brief writeup and a poster presentation by Amit Jhala, a recent postdoctoral researcher in the UCD weed group. Amit and I put out two small experiments in the spring of 2010 to evaluate combinations of glyphosate (Roundup WeatherMax) plus various residual herbicides in a walnut orchard near Davis and a vineyard near Winters, CA.
All treatments included 2 lb ae/A glyphosate The residual materials included:
- penoxsulam (to be registered alone as "Tangent" and is one of the active ingredients in "Pindar GT")
- indazaflam (to be registered as...

I had the opportunity last week to attend the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) annual meeting which was held in Portland OR this year. The meeting was really interesting as usual with many interesting oral and poster research presentations.
Two UCD weed scientists, Joe DiTomasso and Kassim Al-Khatib, were honored with the Society's Fellow Award - the highest level of recognition given by the group. More info on this award can be found here: http://www.wssa.net/WSSA/PressRoom/WSSA-2011-AwardWinners.htm
I've attached a research report presented by a UCD...
