I thought I share a rundown of last week's 57th Annual Weed Day hosted by the UC Davis Weed Science Program and the UC Weed Research and Information Center.
This year the program was organized and (mostly) hosted by CE Weed Specialist Joe DiTomaso. We had a great turnout (about 140 total) and an awesome day with temps in the low 90's - not bad for July 11th in the Central Valley! I will try to follow suit temperature-wise next year when my turn to organize Weed Day rolls around...
As we have done in the past few years, this year's Weed Day started off with a half day field tour of research plots near the UC Davis...

A reminder to all who registered already that the 57th Annual UC Davis Weed Day is this Thursday (July 11th). I've attached the agenda for the morning field tour and the afternoon presentation schedule at the end of this post.
If you haven't already registered, you're too late - we've filled up the buses, lunch, and the conference room capacity (we max out at about 150 for this event). However, be sure to put the 58th conference on your calender for NEXT YEAR - July 17, 2014.
We appreciate and acknowledge the sponsors for this event:...

Another link to a University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Field Day.
Weed Science Farm Advisor John Roncoroni (Napa and surrounding counties) will be show and discuss the results of a wine grape herbicide trial at Hess Vineyards near American Canyon CA on July 17th.
Should be an interesting opportunity to talk about new herbicides, changing weed problems, and resistance management in wine grape production systems and other perennial crops.
Hope to see you there.
Brad

Threespike goosegrass is a warm season perennial grass which is a problem weed in some almond orchards around Orland, California. It is easily identified by its distinctive (see photo) seed heads (spikes). It is usually a problem during the first years of an orchard. The bunch grass growth habit traps nuts at harvest. After somewhere between 5-8 years, it is too shaded to continue being a problem weed.
Pre-emergence control of threespike goosegrass is the best approach. Since goosegrass can emerge from April through August, a long persisting pre-emergence herbicide is needed. Alion is a new herbicide with more persistent weed control, which we are currently testing for April through August threespike goosegrass control. Alion...

UCD ag engineering professor Ken Giles and colleagues have been testing a remote controlled helicopter for pesticide application in challenging terrain like hillside vineyards.
I'd heard about this research and knew there was going to be a field demo at the Oakville Experimental Vineyard (UC Vit and Enol Dept) in the Napa Valley. It sounded really interesting and I was hoping to be able to go but, unfortunately, duty called and I was I was out of town that day and not able to attend.
However, there was a nice...
