Are you tired of the triple-digit temperatures? Wish someone would throw a breeze your way and provide a little shade?
A honey bee foraging on a Mexican sunflower (Tithonia rotundifola) probably felt a slight breeze when a Western tiger swallowtail (Papilio rutulus) fluttered down and landed next to her.
This is a two-insect blossom now.
Butterfly: "Bee, what are you doing?"
Bee: "Sipping some nectar, same as you."
Butterfly: "Bee, don't get any closer."
Bee, edging closer. "But I was here first. The nectar is excellent."
Butterfly: "Go away."
Bee: "No."
Butterfly: "Then I will." The butterfly lifts off.
Bee: "Thanks for the shade. You make a good umbrella, Madam Butterfly. Come back anytime."

Edited from January 15, 2010 announcement from UCD-IET.
UC Davis' Adobe Connect Pro server has moved to a vendor-hosted solution. This announcement is about the migration off of, and shutdown of the campus Adobe Connect server (http://breeze.ucdavis.edu).Please review the following information carefully if you have hosted sessions or created recordings using the campus Adobe Connect service. This announcement does not apply to Adobe Presenter users.
CAMPUS-HOSTED RETIREMENT TIMELINE
* Monday, January 18 will be the last day to use the campus-hosted Adobe Connect service to host on-line meetings. If you do not sign up for UC Davis' new Adobe-hosted Adobe Connect Pro service, you will not have access to Adobe Connect Pro services after January 18.
* The campus-hosted Adobe Connect server will be unavailable from Tuesday, January 19 through Friday, January 22. After January 22, you will have access to migrate or offload data from the campus server upon request only. Send requests for access to connectpro@ucdavis.edu.MIGRATING/OFFLOADING RECORDINGS
For help migrating and offloading contact between now and January 18, or after January 22, please send email to connectpro@ucdavis.edu.
- If you have meeting recordings you do not wish to migrate or offload, please send an email to connectpro@ucdavis.edu stating that you authorize UCD's Information and Education Technology (IET) to permanently delete the materials you have stored on the Adobe Connect server. If we do not receive this permission, IET will create an archive of your meeting recordings, and after June 30, 2010, there will be a labor charge to recover files.
- Presenter files have been playing from a virtual server. For the time being they will continue to do so, using the original URLs. There is no need to take action.
- Materials uploaded directly into a meeting cannot be download from the old server.

Adobe Connect was originally developed by Macromedia and called Breeze. Desktop videoconferencing is its thing. You can be at your desk and using a computer with an Internet connection and a browser like Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc., share documents, images, and audio. If webcams are used at both ends, it's like a video phone but with space for sharing items on your desktop.
For ANR faculty and staff, you have unlimited access to use Adobe Connect without charge.
Connect is primarily developed to allow one person to give a PowerPoint presentation to one or more folks at the other end. Connect will let you upload your PPT file and will convert it to Flash. Everything in Connect is Flash-based. Flash is the video format most conducive to the Internet. It is installed on 98% of all personal computers, so compatibility is in its favor, too.
You can overlay a whiteboard to draw on photos, or charts, or illustrations, or any other document you share and print the results.
For interaction with your audience, there is a Chat pod, and you can poll them with the Poll pod.
There is no software to install and your audience doesn't need any training to participate in a meeting you host.
To host a meeting, you need to be added to the server and training would be a good thing, too. Contact me at 530-754-3905 or mlpoe@ucdavis.edu for both.
