While in Georgia, I would often observe fire ants building mounds around some Palmer amaranth plants; and sometimes even boring in to them (we thought that they were trying to get to moisture). We also have hypothesized that fire ants (or some similarly sized arthropod) could be moving/predating Palmer seed. (Glyphosate Resistance Does Not Affect Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) Seedbank Longevity. Lynn M. Sosnoskie , Theodore M. Webster , and A. Stanley Culpepper) Not being entomologists, and having many other projects under way) we didn't investigate further.
