'Perle D'Or'

Aka ‘Yellow Cecile Brunner’

Modern, Polyantha, Yellow Blend, Repeat Flowering

This is sometimes called a China Rose, being the result of an early cross between strains of Multiflora and Tea Roses. Clusters of up to 30 very small, urn-shaped buds open into double, narrow-petalled blooms of honey pink, showing light apricot in their confused centers as they expand. The variety’s name, which translates to ‘golden pearl,’ reflects the raiser’s aspiration to obtain a yellow Polyantha rose. The synonym suggests a relationship with ‘Cecile Brunner’ – there is no connection. The flowers appear throughout summer and autumn and are borne on a spindly, free-branching dwarf shrub of upright habit that can become a substantial plant in warm climates. The blooms emit a pleasing light fragrance, and for buttonholes and small floral arrangements this variety is a treasure. As a garden plant it has historic interest as well as intrinsic beauty, and is one to grow where it can be viewed. The leaflets are small, glossy and pointed and the whole plant, which looks quite frail, is surprisingly tough and long lived. The rose has long been credited to Dubreuil, but the Journal des Roses for 1900 states it was “Developed by P. Rambaux in 1875 and released to commerce in 1883 by F. Dubreuil.”
