Data Storytelling Toolkit
Each of California’s local health departments (LHDs) serves a unique community, planning and delivering a targeted set of CalFresh Healthy Living programs to meet community needs. Nutrition Policy Institute (NPI) developed the Data Storytelling Toolkit to empower LHDs to communicate their program and evaluation data with stakeholders in a meaningful way. You can even use this toolkit to create more than one story!
The Data Storytelling Toolkit includes:
- A Data Story Template that each LHD can customize to create a visually appealing data story to print or share digitally (Canva)
- A plain text copy of the Data Story Template, for planning purposes (Word)
- A sample data story for 'Hypothetical County,' made with fictional data (PDF)
- A set of Data Tables, hosted in your LHD's Evaluation OneDrive folder, summarizing your LHD’s program and evaluation data (Excel)
- A Data Storytelling Toolkit Instruction Guide (PDF)
Data Storytelling Toolkit Virtual Workshops
In early June 2024, NPI will facilitate Data Storytelling Toolkit Virtual Workshops. During these workshops, LHDs will be guided through the process of developing a local data storytelling product using the toolkit. LHDs will have the opportunity to interact with the toolkit using their own data and can expect to leave the workshop with a draft story!
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe the toolkit's purpose and format
- Use Canva's basic features to modify the Data Story Template effectively
- Find relevant information in the Data Tables to input into the Data Story Template
LHDs can choose to attend any of the workshops. Workshop content will repeat, so please choose the most convenient day and time. We encourage larger LHDs with multiple interested staff to register together to collaborate on a data story in real time. Please sign up for a free Canva account ahead of your chosen training date.
