Grow a cover crop to protect and enrich your soil this winter
Shorter days, cooler nights and less water are this year seeing the early demise of our tomato plants. It’ s time to pull the sorry looking summer crops out and consider what to replace them with. Talk of El Nino winter rains mean we need to take extra care to hold our soil in place and prevent erosion. If you don’t want to grow winter vegetables but would like to benefit your soil then consider using a cover crop. Legumes such as fava beans, crimson clover and hairy vetch will both protect your soil and add the nitrogen our clay soils so crave.
