Gardening Tips - Chilling Requirement and Tree Selection

Did you know that some plants need a certain number of hours at or below 45 degrees Fahrenheit if they are to bear fruit?

Or, in the case of tulips, to promote flowers?  Most apple varieties require 1200-1500 hours below 45 degrees F whereas pomegranates only have a chilling requirement of 100-150 hours.  When you visit the nursery this winter to select a tree consider your local microclimate before making your decision.
