Gardening Tips - Planning Your Cutting Garden?

cut flowers
Do you love cut flowers in your home?

Why not grow them yourself and do double duty by planting perennials that provide eye candy and food for the very beneficial bees and butterflies as well as a color punch for your garden and indoors too!  Here is a list of desirable perennials with their colors and blooming times.  Most perennials like a sunny spot but a few will grow in the shade.  Plant the back rows with taller Cosmos, Milkweed, Coneflowers, Yarrow or Agastache for your tall stemmed vases.  Shorter varieties such as Salvia, Scabiosa, or Nepeta can look delightful in smaller mason jar bouquets.  Tuck in some lavender or rosemary for their pleasant fragrance and added greenery.  Be sure to purchase seeds or plants from reliable sources that avoid using the harmful Neonicotinoids which prevent the beneficial insects from doing their good works of eliminating the harmful pests.  Plant several varieties amid your vegetables to attract the good pollinators and conserve space as well.  Many on this list are deer resistant as an added plus.  To promote longer blooming time you can deadhead.  Or leave them for the beneficial insects to continue munching on. Be creative and watch the Swallowtails, Monarchs, Painted Ladies and happy bees come into your garden.  Check out these resources for more information on perennial flower blooms and seasonal pollinator plants.
