Tim Hartz: Predicting nitrogen sufficiency in organic proccessing tomato production
Vegetable crops specialist Tim Hartz presents recent research on predicting N sufficiency in organic tomato production. 37 organic processing tomato fields were monitored for soil nitrogen and plant N concentration, as well as soil N mineralization capacity. Results suggest that N dynamics in organic production are not that different from conventional production, and that organic fields should begin the cropping season with a large pool of residual soil nitrate in order to meet crop N demand.
Tom Tomich: The California Nitrogen Assessment: Overview
Tom Tomich, Director of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute at UC Davis, presents an overview of the upcoming California Nitrogen Assessment. The discussion touches on the overall goals of the assessment, as well as underlying drivers of N flows, an overview of the mass balance approach, guide to N chemistry, impact on human well being, and more.
Daniel Giesseler: Optimizing Nutrient Management -- Tools and Approaches
Cooperative Extension specialist Daniel Giesseler presents resources for nutrient management as well as an irrigation and nutrient management modeling simulation.
Bruce Houdesheldt, Northern CA Water Association
Bruce Houdesheldt, Director of Regulatory Affairs at the Northern CA Water Association, gives an overview of Nitrogen Management Plans, and the challenges of implementing them.
Farmer panel discussion: On-farm approaches to sustainable nitrogen cycling
Dr. Sonja Brodt, Academic Coordinator at the Agricultural Sustainability Institute, moderates a conversation about farm management of nitrogen cycling with growers Bruce Rominger, Mike Turkovich and Tom Willey.
