Tim Hartz: Predicting nitrogen sufficiency in organic proccessing tomato production
Vegetable crops specialist Tim Hartz presents recent research on predicting N sufficiency in organic tomato production. 37 organic processing tomato fields were monitored for soil nitrogen and plant N concentration, as well as soil N mineralization capacity. Results suggest that N dynamics in organic production are not that different from conventional production, and that organic fields should begin the cropping season with a large pool of residual soil nitrate in order to meet crop N demand.
