Self-guided Tour of Interesting Trees on the Shasta College Campus
This walking tour is part of a project that was completed in May 2012 for the GIS 25 course (Geographic Information Systems) at Shasta College. The GIS Instructor is Dan Scollon. The project team included students Cherry Chico, Ryan Salas, Victoria Birdseye and Steve Ganger. The project included mapping and identifying all trees in the greater Shasta College campus area. It covered a circular area of about a half mile diameter which extends from the Administration building to the Agriculture department and included approximately 1600 trees.
With the help of Leimone Waite, Shasta College Agriculture Instructor and UC Master Gardener Coordinator for Shasta County, we chose nineteen interesting trees to include in a self-guided walking tour. The tour was initially designed to be used by the Shasta College Agriculture and Botany departments as well as the Master Gardener training program. However, as the project progressed, we realized that the residents of Shasta county and visitors to the area might also be interested in taking the tour.
Steve Ganger, a UC Master Gardener and GIS student, developed the handout for the Tree Tour. We are posting this handout to make the Tree Tour accessible to the public.
The handout includes the common name, botanical name, whether it is a California native or non native and the location of each tree. A map is also included which labels the trees in sequential order and charts the route from start to finish. The tour is 1.25 miles and takes approximately one hour to walk.
The handout is a four page printable PDF document. In the interest of saving paper, the handout is designed so you can take the tour using just the third and fourth pages. And if you print front and back, it is only one sheet.
There are many other beautiful species of trees on campus. To keep the tour within our distance and time constraints we did not include them. We encourage visitors to take the tour, bring a field guide and explore the rest of the beautiful Shasta College Campus.
