4-H Program Models

Program sites are on-going cooperative ventures between your facility and the University of California Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth Development Program. By designating your facility as a program site, your staff and clientele will be provided with curriculum, on-going development, support, resources, and evaluation tools. Program sites are expected to complete a minimum of six-hours of instruction per curriculum unit and complete program reports.

4-H Club

An organized club in the community, in-school, or afterschool with an on-going planned educational program delivered by adults from the community, school, or afterschool program. Youth and adults individually enroll in the 4-H Youth Development Program. 4-H club members are eligible to participate in county, state and national 4-H events like camp, leadership conferences, public speaking contests and field days. All clubs and units are required to make efforts to recruit new members and adult volunteers, with a focus on underrepresented groups, and to document these efforts.

  • Costs: ~$65.00 per youth and $24.00 per adult on an annual basis (July 1 to June 30).
  • Youth eligibility: youth must be at least 5 years old and not older than 18 years old.
  • Membership: At least 5 youth members from at least 3 families; at least 2 appointed adult volunteers.
  • Program: Offer at least 1 project per year; 6 hours of educational experience per project. 

4-H Afterschool Education Program

An on-going planned educational program where youth receive 4-H Youth Development Program curricula or other educational materials delivered by afterschool staff or volunteers during out of school hours. Youth and adults group enroll in the 4-H Youth Development Program on an annual basis (July 1 – June 30), and are under the supervision of the host agency or school.

  • Costs: None.
  • Youth eligibility: youth must be at least 5 years old and not older than 18 years old.
  • Membership: No limits; decided by the afterschool program. UCCE collects the group enrollment form annually (aggregated numbers of youth participating; no personal information collected).
  • Program: No limits; decided by the afterschool program.

4-H School Enrichment Program

An on-going planned educational program where youth receive 4-H Youth Development Program curricula or other educational materials delivered by school staff or volunteers during school hours. Youth and adults group enroll in the 4-H Youth Development Program on an annual basis (July 1 – June 30), and are under the direct supervision of school personnel.

  • Costs: None.
  • Youth eligibility: youth must be at least 5 years old and not older than 18 years old.
  • Membership: No limits; decided by the afterschool program. UCCE collects the group enrollment form annually (aggregated numbers of youth participating; no personal information collected).
  • Program: No limits; decided by the afterschool program.
