Plan to attend the first Joint Strategic Initiative Conference

The 2015 UC ANR Joint Strategic Initiative Conference will be held October 5-7 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel, 1230 J Street, in Sacramento.

Who should attend: Academics affiliated with ANR – UCCE Advisors, UCCE Specialists, AES Faculty, Program Directors and Academic Coordinators.

Submit a poster abstract to participate in a poster session. To be given priority consideration, please submit poster abstracts by June 1. For details, see http://ucanr.edu/sites/2015jointsiconference/Call_for_Posters.

At the conference, you'll have the opportunity to

• Meet the new Vice President (to be invited) at the Monday evening reception.
• Participate in planning sessions for the Strategic Initiatives.

• Request space for your Program Team or Workgroups to meet.
• Network at the Stakeholders' Reception on Tuesday evening.

Harper to lead Sustainable Natural Ecosystems Strategic Initiative

I am pleased to announce that John Harper has agreed to lead the Sustainable Natural Ecosystems Strategic Initiative for a two–year appointment. As the SNE initiative leader, John will serve on Program Council.

John has been a UC Cooperative Extension advisor specializing in livestock and natural resources for 23 years in Mendocino and Lake counties. His research covers sheep and goat production, range cattle production, rangeland, watershed, water quality and computer applications. As an advisor, he has worked with fellow UCCE advisors, specialists and Agricultural Experiment Station scientists on several research and education projects. He served as UCCE director for Mendocino County for 13 years, and also oversaw UCCE in Lake County for four of those years.

John has been an integral part of local, statewide and regional projects addressing critical natural resources issues. These efforts have provided him with a good understanding of the breadth of ANR. He has demonstrated a good vision for expanding involvement in the initiative as well as revisiting the initiative's strategic plan.

He succeeds James Bartolome, professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at UC Berkeley, who retired.

ANR seeks leader for Sustainable Natural Ecosystems Strategic Initiative

ANR is seeking a leader for the Sustainable Natural Ecosystems Strategic Initiative. In this role, the individual will provide leadership for the initiative including:

• working with the initiative panel members in revisiting and revising the Sustainable Natural Ecosystems (SNE) Initiative’s strategic plan
• shepherding the ANR Competitive Grants process
• planning and conducting Strategic Initiative Conferences
• identifying and initiating SNE projects such as development of policy briefs, special projects, etc.

All of these efforts are done in concert with the other strategic initiative leaders and with support from ANR units such as Program Planning and Evaluation and the Program Support Unit.

In addition to these efforts, the strategic initiative leader participates as a member of ANR’s Program Council. Program Council advises the ANR Vice President on Divisionwide planning and delivery of programs and develops recommendations for the allocation of Division resources. Program Council is also the forum for discussion and development of recommendations on a wide array of policy and procedures as requested by the Vice President. Important efforts in the coming year are completion of the ANR Competitive Grants review and the prioritization of new CE positions. In both processes, Program Council makes the final recommendations to the Vice President.

The initiative leader is provided a travel budget sufficient for the leader and the panel members and an administrative stipend. Register for October program team meetings

Registration is now open for the program team meetings being held Oct. 9 and 10 at International House at UC Berkeley.

The Forest & Rangeland Systems and Meat Production & Food Safety program teams plan to meet. There will be discussions about programs and positions in natural resources and animal sciences.

Speakers will include

• Daniel Mountjoy, director of restoration on private lands, Sustainable Conservation
• Kelli McCune, project manager, Sustainable Conservation
• Mark Nechodom, conservation director, California Department of Conservation

At the October gathering, ANR members who are associated with the Sustainable Natural Ecosystems Strategic Initiative will be invited to provide input for articles planned for the special issue of California Agriculture that will focus on sustainable natural ecosystems.

To meet during this October meeting, chairs of workgroups affiliated with these program teams should complete a short survey to request space.

Reminder: Register for Strategic Initiative conferences
