Developing Volunteer Capacities

Summary Definition: Our approach towards volunteer development takes a comprehensive view to building and sustaining volunteer capacity: knowledge, skills, disposition, and sense of self. We believe that all organization-individual interactions are opportunities for volunteers to advance toward individual, as well as organizational goals, and therefore to strengthen University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) Statewide Program extension efforts.

Purpose: Recognizing that volunteers are integral to the success of UC ANR Programs, the purpose of the workgroup is to increase volunteers’ capacity through the collaborative efforts of workgroup members.

Goals/Objectives:

- Establish and meet benchmarks, competencies, and best practices in Extension volunteerism, which will inform consistent professional development opportunities.

- Provide researched-based curriculum, resources, tools, evaluations, etc. that help the organization meet aforementioned benchmarks.

- Meet the diverse needs of UC ANR volunteers, experienced and new, by creating ways to interact with and support them.

- Consistently address UC ANR strategic initiatives focused on positive youth development, home horticulture, preservation, etc. through activities in core content areas (e.g., scientific literacy, citizenship, healthy living).

- Extend knowledge through research and development generated by workgroup activities.
