Urban UCCE academics invited to policy workshop

Cooperative Extension advisors and specialists who work in urban or metropolitan communities are invited to a policy workshop in Sacramento on Dec. 1 and 2.

The Western Center for Metropolitan Extension and Research Policy Workshop will meet Tuesday, Dec. 1, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Wednesday, Dec. 2, 8:30 a.m. to noon, with an optional Applied Skill Building workshop at 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop will be held at the University of California Policy Center at 1130 K Street, Suite LL22, in Sacramento.

Participants will learn how policy is made at the local, regional and state levels, and how policy impacts system change.

Presenters will discuss how governmental systems are organized, what makes good policy and how to use science in policy development. They will provide local examples of policy development. In the optional two-hour session on Wednesday afternoon, the group will engage in hands-on exercises.

The workshop runs concurrently with the National Urban Extension Leaders Meeting.

“Essential Facilitation” training available

Shelley Murdock and Ellie Rilla will offer “Essential Facilitation” training June 15-17 at the ANR Building in Davis. The training will be three full days and the participant must be committed to participate in the training the full three days. “Essential Facilitation” is open to all UC-ANR academics and staff. The interactive workshop has a minimum session size of 10 people, with a maximum of 14.

The cost for the “Essential Facilitation” Training and related travel expenses are being covered by UC ANR funds and coordinated through the ANR Training Coordination Advisory Committee.

The workshop will give participants practical, proven models and tools for planning and conducting effective meetings through an interactive format that includes a comprehensive manual, practice sessions, discussion and video feedback. Participants will learn and practice a facilitated approach for building understanding and agreement among people. The knowledge gained from this training will contribute to participants’ professional growth and the Division will benefit from the individual’s increased capabilities, confidence and skill levels.

In the e-mail, indicate that you are registering for the “Essential Facilitation” Training. Please provide your name, e-mail address, your unit, mailing address and phone number. Registration will be on first-come, first-served basis and only 14 slots are available. Individuals will be notified in late April/early May whether they were selected to participate or placed on a waiting list.

'Crucial Conversations' training in May

A “Crucial Conversations” workshop will be offered by Darlene Liesch, emeritus UCCE advisor, and Linda Marie Manton, executive director of ANR Staff Personnel. The 14-hour training will be offered on May 18-19 in Davis.

The workshop will begin at 9:30 a.m. the first day and conclude by 3 p.m. the second day. The workshop is open to all ANR academics and staff. The interactive workshop has a minimum session size of 10 people with a maximum of 20, which allows for small group and one-on-one interaction and activities.

The cost for the “Crucial Conversations” training and related travel expenses are being covered by UC ANR funds and coordinated through the ANR Training Coordination Advisory Committee.

“Crucial Conversations” will provide participants with tools for talking when stakes are high, emotions are strong and the opinions of individuals differ.  It will help each workshop participant to build greater personal influence and power, move “stuck” relationships and projects forward, improve personal, team and departmental results, and reduce stress from team frustrations and blocked communication.
