Positions available on UC ANR Staff Assembly Council

Staff Assembly Council is recruiting for two UC ANR staff members to complete the remainder of the term for two positions on the Staff Assembly Council - communications chair/coordinator and program chair. The terms run through June 30, 2021.

All UC ANR staff employees are members of the UC ANR Staff Assembly, including county-paid, part-time and limited-appointment staff. The elected leaders of the group make up the council, which meets monthly via Zoom to plan activities and address staff issues. The council regularly seeks input from staff on policies, processes and programs and serves in an advisory capacity to UC ANR leadership, giving staff a collective voice on issues of concern. The council also provides support for career training and professional development to aid career advancement.

Following are excerpts from the Staff Assembly Bylaws that detail the role of the two vacant positions:

Communications Chair/Coordinator

  1. Serves as a liaison between Staff Assembly Council and all UC ANR staff to promote and advocate improved communication and interaction.
  2. Maintains and updates website as needed to reflect current and accurate information.
  3. Promotes UC ANR Staff Assembly events and programs as needed and works in conjunction with appropriate workgroup or committees to disseminate appropriate promotions.
  4. Assumes other responsibilities as specified elsewhere in the bylaws or as needed.

Program Chair

  1. Develops and submits to the SA Council for approval a list of possible topics for programs.
  2. Schedules programs, meetings and guest speakers and coordinates other details.
  3. Works with the chair and scribe to send “thank you” letters to guest speakers.
  4. Coordinates the SA Ambassador Program.
  5. Oversees the Educational Reimbursement Scholarship Program committee member(s).

Placer-Nevada wins Healthy over the Holidays group challenge

Congratulations to Placer-Nevada UC Cooperative Extension. The office's Staff Assembly Ambassador, Annette Cosgrove, submitted the winning entry to the Healthy over the Holiday's photo contest.

Cosgrove led the staff and academics at Placer and Nevada UCCE in taking five group walks, two Zumba sessions, a holiday party using reusable utensils and a hallway chair race on a rainy day. The prize is an assortment of California-grown healthy goodies from Circle K Country Store in Fowler.

First runner-up in the contest was a photo collage of members of the Houston Wilson lab at the UC Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Staff research associate Jessia Maccaro (pictured in the lower left corner of the photo collage) leads staff in a daily yoga practice in the winter to get everyone in the right frame of mind for working together inside the lab.

"Healthy over the Holidays was designed to remind us that wellness should encompass all pieces of our lives from mindfulness practices to dedicating time for meaningful relationships,” said Kaela Plank, chair of the UC ANR Staff Assembly wellness committee. “The feedback we have received from this year's program has been overwhelmingly positive. Our committee is excited to continue to improve this program in order to meet the needs of the ANR community.”

Individual participants took home prizes, while all 168 UC ANR staff who signed up to be Healthy over the Holidays were winners. They received weekly emails with encouragement to eat healthy, get physical activity and take care of their mental health during a time when many people set their health goals aside until the New Year.

Almost half of the participants submitted the completion survey. Of those, 87% reported making one positive change – such as practicing mindfulness, making time for their hobbies, choosing to eat more fruits and vegetables, and getting more sleep. Seventy-four percent of respondents said they enjoyed the holistic approach and 72% enjoyed the newsletter. One office has committed to continuing their weekly walks in 2020. 

The individual winners of Healthy over the Holidays were picked randomly from the participants who filled out the completion survey. Javier Miramontes and Keilani Cordero won Fitbits and Elizabeth Gong won a bamboo cutting board.

Recording of ANR town hall posted

During the ANR town hall Thursday, Nov. 21, VP Glenda Humiston shared encouraging news, including new sources of funding, response to the UC regents tours and the new report “California's Working Landscape: A Key Contributor to the State's Economic Vitality,” which shows working landscape accounts for 6.4% of the state's economy. She also answered questions from town hall participants about the budget and other issues.

John Fox, Human Resources executive director, and Nikolai Schweitzer, Staff Assembly chair, announced ANR's results of the recent UC Staff Engagement Survey of non-represented staff. Of the 222 ANR employees responding, Schweitzer said most thought we made progress in wellness, performance management and supervision. Satisfaction declined for image/brand, career development and sustainable engagement. He said Staff Assembly plans to discuss opportunities for improvement in those areas, then meet with ANR senior leadership to suggest solutions.

Fox announced that in the spring ANR will conduct a survey to gather similar information from all ANR employees, including academics.

Healthy Snack Day winners show their creativity

Thanks to all who participated in Healthy Snack Day 2019! The Wellness committee was very impressed with the level of creativity sites brought to this event.

Many of you enjoyed local fruits and vegetables from your home gardens and even gardens at your sites (shout out to Placer and Nevada Counties, Kearney REC, UCCE Orange County, and South Coast REC).

Other sites used Healthy Snack Day as an opportunity to connect with other departments in their building and to test out recipes for future community nutrition classes. Great ideas!

We were so excited to hear that you all are using this team building opportunity in creative ways and we are thrilled to announce the winners for both the photo and recipe competitions.

We had 13 sites participate in the photo competition and three sites in the recipe competition.

Photo competition winners are as follows:

First place: Kearney REC

UC ANR staff at Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center took first place for Healthy Snack Day 2019.

Second Place, UCCE Contra Costa

UCCE Contra Costa won second place.

Third Place: UCCE Humboldt-Del Norte

UCCE Humboldt-Del Norte took third place.

Spicy and crispy garbonzos

Ingredients

1 cup dried garbanzos, soak overnight then cook until tender. Lay on paper towels to dry
4 T olive oil
Maldon salt
Thyme leaves
Spanish paprika

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Toss the cooked garbanzos with olive oil. Put on a cooksheet in a single layer and bake until brown and crispy in oven.

Toss with a touch more olive oil, thyme, salt and Spanish paprika. 

Second place: the Nutrition Policy Institute for their radish cucumber salad recipe.

  • cucumber (about 2 cups)
  • 1 bunch radishes (about 2 cups)
  • 1/8 red onion (about 1/4 cup)
  • 3 tablespoons fresh dill
  • 1 can (15oz) chickpeas
  • 1 – 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon mineral salt, or to taste
  • freshly cracked pepper, to taste

TIPS FOR THE BEST CUCUMBER RADISH SALAD

Use the freshest ingredients possible. With only a few ingredients in this radish cucumber salad, try to source the best and freshest possible. Use your favorite kind of radishes and cucumbers.

Prepping tips: If your cucumbers and radishes are the wider side cut them into half moon shapes. It makes it a little easier to eat. But if they are thinner side leave them in whole circles if you like. No need to peel the cucumbers, the skin adds fiber and nutrition.

Use as much dill as you like. For myself, the more the merrier – it's such a refreshing herb!

Season well: Use plenty of salt and as much pepper as you like. The radishes are peppery, but once the salad is mixed all together, they aren't as noticeable, so a little extra pepper is nice.

Planning on making your radish and cucumber salad ahead? Keep the cider dressing separate from the salad until ready to serve. The zucchini and radishes will soak up the dressing and start to soften and pickle. It's not a bad thing, but if you prefer a crisp presentation mix the salad with the dressing just before setting on the table. It won't hurt to mix up to 15 minutes ahead of time.

HOW TO MAKE RADISH AND CUCUMBER SALAD

  1. Wash the cucumber and radishes well, scrubbing as necessary.
  2. Trim the ends from the cucumber and radishes and thinly slice, using a knife or mandoline.
  3. Drain and rinse the chickpeas.
  4. Add the cucumber, radish, chickpea, dill, apple cider vinegar, oil, salt and pepper to a large mixing bowl, toss well to coat.

And all that's left is to enjoy as is or chill before eating. Enjoy!

HOW TO STORE LEFTOVERS

Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 – 5 days in a covered container.

Third place: UCCE San Joaquin for their Fruit Pico de Gallo recipe.

Ingredients

1 cup peeled and chopped fresh mango
1 cup chopped fresh watermelon
1 cup chopped fresh pineapple or canned pineapple in 100% juice
1 cup peeled and chopped fresh papaya
1 cup peeled and chopped jicama
Juice from 1 lime
1 teaspoon chili powder

Preparation

Mix together all the fruit in a medium bowl and sprinkle with lime juice and chili powder. Serve immediately.

Congratulations to all six site winners! We hope that the first prize winners enjoy their healthy snack boxes, the second place winners feel refreshed when using their spa water container and recipe book prize and the third place winners use their apple slicers for years to come.

UC ANR visits the Capitol

The first UC ANR Day at the Capitol was March 26, 2019.

UC ANR Day at the Capitol was held on March 26, 2019, to update California legislators and legislative staff on UC ANR's research and outreach projects. Vice President Glenda Humiston and a UC ANR delegation discussed a wide variety of topics during the legislative visits, including wildfire and forest health, water quality, youth development, nutrition and climate adaptation.

Every year, representatives from each UC campus gather in Sacramento for UC Day at the Capitol to educate lawmakers about the importance of research and higher education and their contributions to California's economy and progress. Although UC ANR participates in the annual Ag Day at the Capitol, this was the first UC ANR Day at the Capitol.

State Senator Jim Nielsen, fourth from left, who represents the Town of Paradise and the surrounding communities, thanked Tracy Schohr and Bailey Butler for helping Butte County residents evacuate their animals and keep them safe during the Camp Fire.

ANR's Global Food Initiative fellow Maci Mueller set up appointments with the policymakers and coordinated the UC ANR delegation to explain the value of investment in UC ANR research and outreach.

The UC ANR delegation consisted of two teams led by Humiston and Wendy Powers, associate vice president. The teams included Faith Kearns, California Institute for Water Resources academic coordinator; Ruth Dahlquist-Willard, UC Cooperative Extension small farms advisor for Fresno and Tulare counties; Tracy Schohr, UC Cooperative Extension livestock and natural resource advisor for Plumas, Sierra and Butte counties; Alena Pacheco, 4-H community education specialist in Fresno County; Bailey Butler, Oroville 4-H member; and El Dorado County 4-H Ambassadors Emily Ferrell, Josie Rothman and Isabella Veffredo, who were accompanied by El Dorado County 4-H program representatives Vera Bullard and Denise Veffredo. 

Alena Pacheco told Assemblymember Susan Talamantes Eggman, standing fourth from left, how 4-H collaborates with UC Master Gardener Program and UC CalFresh Nutrition Education to engage at-risk children in Fresno County in gardening and other activities to teach them life and work skills.

“As a team, we were able to connect with every member or staffer that we met,” Powers wrote in her ANR Adventures blog. “Sometimes it was around the 4-H program, and what the program has done for our impressive team members, sometimes it was around fire or water, and other staffers or members were particularly interested in moringa. Either way, the goal was to make a connection so that each visit left an impression.”

“UC ANR Day was a terrific opportunity for 4-H members to practice their communication skills and get involved in advocacy at the state level,” Mueller said. 

Oroville 4-H member Bailey described for legislators and their staff how she worked from Nov. 8 when the Camp Fire broke out until after Christmas with UC Cooperative Extension advisor Tracy Schohr and UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine staff to care for 1,200 evacuated livestock and to train others to assist. Emily, a 4-H Ambassador in El Dorado County, said her 4-H experience with STEM activities and leadership training helped her get into the university of her choice – UC Santa Barbara.

The teams visited a total of 17 offices including state senators Cathleen Galgiani (Senate Agriculture Committee chair), Hannah-Beth Jackson, Brian Jones, Connie Leyva, Mike McGuire, Holly J. Mitchell, Jim Nielsen and Scott Wilk and assemblymembers  Brian Dahle, Susan Talamantes Eggman (Assembly Agriculture Committee chair), Heath Flora, Laura Friedman, Monique Limon, Jose Medina, Jay Obernolte, Robert Rivas and Jim Wood.

Greeted warmly by each office, the teams shared examples of work being done by UC ANR in their districts, offered them assistance and thanked the legislators for their support. They left a copy of the UC ANR Snapshot, UC ANR map and overview, a 4-H fact sheet and UC at a Glance.

Legislators praised the 4-H members and UC ANR staff for the work they do for Californians.

“I look forward to making UC ANR Day at the Capitol an annual event,” Humiston said. “Telling people about the value of ANR's work is not only part of our mission, it is essential in educating others about all that we accomplish with the resources we have.”
