Description | This photo was taken at the 2016 Master Gardener Tour in Pacific Grove. I looked through my UCMG texts and online but I couldn't identify it. So I emailed the UCMG Monterey Bay Hotline with the photo saying I didn't know if it was an adult, if it was beneficial or a pest. The Master Gardener hotline volunteer got back to me the same day saying she couldn't identify it right away, but she relished the challenge and would get back to me. She emailed me the next day identifying it as a 'Scudderia' nymph. I'm so glad the hotline works so well! After doing a bit of my own research on the katydid nymph, I learned that most species probably favor foliage of broad-leaved woody deciduous plants, but will feed on a variety of other plants. Nymphs are often seen feeding on flowers of assorted, often herbaceous plants. So, it seems this little nymph probably did the damage to the poppy petals! |
