    April 2020 Tip

It is a good time to plant tomatoes.  Many local  plant nurseries are open and the garden sections of hardware and grocery stores are open and selling tomato plants.  Remember to practice social distancing even when in an outdoor setting.

Tomatoes are described as determinate or indeterminate.  Determinate, tomatoes bear most of their fruit within about 4 to 6 weeks, and then decline in vigor.  Roma is a popular variety of determinate tomatoes.

Indeterminate varieties produce vines that continue to grow and set fruit all summer until they are killed by frost or disease.  They need to be supported by sturdy trellises, cages, or stakes.  Most cherry and slicing tomato varieties are indeterminate.  Ace, Early Girl and Celebrity are popular varieties of indeterminate tomatoes.
