Welcome to Adult Direct Education Evaluation
What is Adult Direct Education Evaluation?
Adult Direct Education Evaluation (Adult DE Eval) is an annual and ongoing evaluation directed by CDSS. To detect change in behavioral outcomes, Local Health Departments (LHDs) are required to conduct pre- and post-surveys before and after all adult-focused education series of at least 4 sessions.
What tool do we use?
All CalFresh Healthy Living state implementing agencies (SIAs) are required to use a core set of questions from the validated Food Behavior Checklist and EFNEP Food & Physical Activity Questionnaire. Nutrition Policy Institute (NPI) adds a few additional questions, designed to inform your interventions. We refer to our survey as the CalFresh Healthy Living Adult Survey. LHDs can choose to administer the survey to class participants online, or via paper, with all paper surveys being entered into the online survey link. The survey is currently available in 13 languages.
When does this take place?
The online survey opens for the new fiscal year in conjunction with PEARS in mid-October. Using paper surveys, you may, but are not required to, evaluate class series that begin before PEARS opens. We end data collection each year on August 31st to ensure we have time to aggregate, match, clean, and analyze data for final reporting. Annually, evaluation is not required to take place between August 31st and mid-October. If you have a class series that begins prior to August 31st, but will not conclude by August 31st, you do not need to evaluate it.
What happens to our data?
Data from all LHDs are analyzed by NPI at the statewide (CDPH) level and reported in N-PEARS. They are also provided to CDSS to aggregate with data from other SIAs. When sample size allows (>30 matched pre/post), your LHD will receive analyzed data. All LHDs collecting matched data will receive matched, cleaned datasets. These products can be found in your LHD Evaluation SharePoint folders.
