Adult Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)
University of California Cooperative Extension San Bernardino County is pleased to offer Eating Smart Being Active through our Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). This research-based program promotes good nutrition and physical activity as a means of preventing and maintaining healthy lifestyle free of chronic disease. The goal is to help adults establish and maintain healthy eating habits and physically active lifestyles for themselves and their families.

About Our Program
Eating Smart, Being Active, a learner-centered education curriculum, consists of eight core lessons, each 60 to 90 minutes long, for use in small group settings. The program can be delivered in English or Spanish. Participants who attend all class sessions will receive a certificate of participation from the University of California.
Participants learn to:
- Plan nutritious meals
- Increase physical activity
- Stretch their food dollar
- Practice safe food handling
- Make healthy lifestyle choices
Participants enjoy the group setting, food demonstrations, recipes, and lesson enhancements. Through federal funding, we are able to offer this program at no-cost to our community.
Target Audience
The program aims to enroll adults, from both urban and rural households, with children under the age of 18 years. Participants should be responsible for planning and preparing family meals.
The San Bernardino County Adult EFNEP program has been offered for more than 30 years, and has been making a difference to our community. Last year EFNEP participants:
- Saved an average of $13/person/month on groceries while still improving the amount of healthy food they consumed.
- Increased their physical activity practices (reported by 56% of EFNEP participants.
- Used nutrition information on food labels to make food choices (reported by 67% of EFNEP participants)
Eligibility
Participants must satisfy at least one of the following:
- Receive or be eligible to receive federal food assistance.
- Have a monthly household cash income that is at or below 185% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
- Be a pregnant teen or foster youth in transition, regardless of income or age.
