Camp Daily Life
Range camp involves lectures and activities, including a group project and presentation at the end of camp. Breakfast is at 7:00am every day, with chores right after and first activity starts at 8:00am. Dinner is at 5:00pm with Counselor activities from 7:00pm on. Lights out by 10:00pm.
Example below is from previous years. Current year’s schedule may differ slightly based on speaker schedules, but most of these topics are offered each year.
Sunday Arrive between 1:00 - 2:00 pm at Elkus. Registration, GPS, and Orienteering. Evening with Camp Counselors for games.
Monday Introduction to Rangelands, Tour of Elkus Youth Ranch, and Plant Collection. Evening with Camp Counselors for games.
Tuesday Products and Uses of Rangelands: Livestock, Wildlife, Recreation, Soils, Water, Fisheries Forestry and Vegetation (Normally off-site for portion of the day). Evening with Camp Counselors for games.
Wednesday Management and Improvement Techniques: Water, Fencing, Seeding and Fertilization, and Grazing Management Systems Ranch Tour and Beach Barbecue with down time - but no swimming! (Another day off-site).
Thursday Public and Private Land Management, Comprehensive & Plant Identification, Field Projects: Range Production and Improvement, Erosion Control, Wildlife and Riparian Management, “Town Hall” Meeting - group presentations. Campfire time.
Friday Camp Clean-up, Graduation, Awards and head home! Parents can arrive between 10:30am and 12:00pm for pick-up, or make arrangements for flights.
