Eligibility and Camp Fees

Age requirement: In order to be considered for Range Camp the applicant must still be in high school as of April 2024. Students who will have graduated high school before Jan 2025 will not be eligible to attend the High School Youth Forum, in the event they win the Top Camper contest.

The camp fee is $750.00. This includes meals, lodging, recreation, and transportation costs while at camp. Transportation to camp from the camper’s home on Sunday and returning from camp on Friday is not included in the camp fee. Arrangements can be made with the camp staff to shuttle campers between the camp and the near-by airports or the train station. Emergency medical insurance is provided through UCANR.

Sponsorships

Majority of campers receive sponsorship from local organizations, such as Resource Conservation Districts (RCD) to cover the camp fee. We encourage all campers being sponsored to give a presentation to the board of the sponsoring organization after camp is over. This helps the board members understand what Range Camp is and can help interested participants in the future get sponsorship. Range Camp will help facilitate coordination with local organizations but it is up to the applicant to develop and secure those relationships.

Students who would like help finding sponsors should note on their registration they would like a sponsorship and contact rangecamp@ucanr.edu

Grants

We have a grant this year that can provide scholarship for any campers who qualify as "Socially Disadvantaged" by United States Department of Agriculture. Below are the definitions from USDA to qualify. If you qualify, there will be a check box on registration to self certify that you meet at least one of the below definitions. There are limited scholarships, but Range Camp staff will help anyone needing a sponsorship find it.  Please contact us.

The term “Socially Disadvantaged” means an

  1. Socially disadvantaged group- a group whose members have been subjected to racial or ethnic prejudice because of their identity as members of a group without regard to their individual qualities. The definition that applies to Titles I, V, and VI includes members of a group subject to gender prejudice, while the definition that applies to Titles II, IX, XII, and XV does not. Title XIV and the Education and Risk Management Assistance provision in Title XII do not make specific reference to the statutory definition of socially disadvantaged farmer or rancher.
  2. Socially disadvantaged Farmer or Rancher- a farmer or rancher who has been subjected to racial or ethnic prejudices because of their identity as a member of a group without regard to their individual qualities. This term means a farmer or rancher who is a member of a socially disadvantaged group. Specifically, a group whose members have been subjected to racial or ethnic prejudice because of their identity as members of a group without regard to their individual qualities. Those groups include African Americans, American Indians or Alaskan natives, Hispanics, and Asians or Pacific Islanders.
  3. Low household income - Low household income means that current-year income falls below the national poverty level for a family of four with two children, or is less than half of the county median household income. For Range Camp that is held in San Mateo County, the median household income is $149,907.  Half of that would be $74,953.50.

Note: Gender alone is not a covered group for the purposes of NRCS conservation program authorities. The term entities reflect a broad interpretation to include partnerships, couples, legal entities, etc.
