4-B Communicating Science with Lay Audiences

Wednesday, April 26, 1:30-3 PM

Effective communication of science should not be one-way or top-down. The best communicators work collaboratively to communicate with people rather than to them. This session will explore multiple communication topics, including the role of storytelling, building trust, personalizing messaging, and making messaging clear/relevant. In this interactive session, participants will learn strategies to mitigate challenging scenarios such as communicating in times of crisis, when misinformation is high, and to audiences with multiple literacy levels.

Sarah-Mae Nelson, Climate Stewards Academic Coordinator, California Naturalist Program
Amanda Crump, Associate Professor, International Agricultural Development, UC Davis
