Dr. Themis Michailides discussed diseases caused by Botryosphaeria fungi and how they have become a major problem in nut crops (almond, pistachio, and walnut) and other tree crops in California. Significant research has been completed in these serious diseases over a span of 20 years. He focused on the blight phase of the disease that results in infection of the fruit and reduction of yields. In addition, historical approaches to managing this disease were discussed. Flatheaded Borer Concerns in California Walnuts by Dr. Jhalendra Rijal (May 31, 2023)
- Dr. Jhalendra Rijal discussed flatheaded borer and how it is an old pest but has become a new problem in California walnuts. He covered various aspects of flatheaded borer IPM management including behavior and biology of the borer, adult emergence timing, monitoring tools, and cultural and insecticidal control methods.

Dr. Florent Trouillas introduced common fungal and bacterial canker diseases affecting almond in California and shared best management strategies for these diseases. He presented elements of the biology of canker diseases as they pertain to best application timing of fungicides.
Monitoring for and Managing Nematodes in Nut Crops by Dr. Andreas Westphal (November 16, 2022)
- Dr. Andreas Westphal discussed the management of nematodes in nut crops. He provided an introduction to plant-parasitic nematodes including their biology, feeding habits, and host range. He also discussed monitoring, soil sampling, and management options such as rootstocks, pre-plant soil treatments, and post-plant remedies.
Best Management Practices for Navel Orangeworm in Nut Crops by David Haviland (November 17, 2021)
- David Haviland discussed navel orangeworm, the most important insect pest of almonds and pistachios. Sanitation, monitoring programs, timely harvest, insecticides and mating disruption as integral parts of an integrated pest management program against this pest, were also discussed.
Invasive Brown Marmorated Stink Bug and Other Hemipteran Bug Pests of Almonds by Jhalendra Rijal (March 24, 2021)
- Brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) is an invasive stink bug species that has been causing economic damage to almonds in California in the last 3 to 4 years in the northern San Joaquin Valley. Dr. Jhalendra Rijal discussed the identification and biology of the pest and ways to monitor this pest in almond orchards. He also talked about the biology and feeding nature of other native stink bugs and leaffooted bugs that may be present in an almond orchard
