Ruellia is native to the warmer climes of Central America and the South, sometimes known a ‘Mexican Petunia'. Here in Solano County, Ruellia brittoniana does well in Sunset Western Garden zones 9 and 14 and is in the Northern end of its range.
This perennial has a habit of 1-3 feet wide and tall; providing dark green stems and foliage with tubular bluish purple flowers about two inches long.
Optimal conditions include full sun and regular water, an edged planting area is recommended as Ruellia can be invasive. Ruellia requires very little care.
This plant was propagated from a cutting and has survived two winters nicely with just cutting back the old stems.
