We've had a stainless-steel food waste bucket for 26 years (the same one). We place our raw fruit and vegetable kitchen trimmings in our bucket which is delivered to our outside worm compost bin at least once a week. Then we wash the bucket with soap and water and rinse well before repeating the cycle. We do not use a bucket liner, so nothing there to manage. The lid fits tightly so we manage to not have insect pests or even odors. Love my bucket!
