The Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI, http://www.energybiosciencesinstitute.org/) of the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar-Employee position starting July to August 2014. The candidate will work with Dr. Matthew D. Potts (www.pottsgroup.org), Dr. Scott Stephens, Dr. Bill Stewart, and Dr. Peter Tittmann on a newly funded project to analyze the viability of sustainable woody bioenergy systems in the forested regions of North America. The appointment will initially be for one year and may be renewed. The position offers a competitive salary plus benefits.

Responsibilities:

This research will identify common opportunities and risks for the development of sustainable bioenergy systems by utilizing an interdisciplinary, systems-based approach that integrates ecological, economic, and social aspects of forestry to compare and contrast the production economics, market conditions, climate change impacts, and environmental sustainability challenges.

Minimum/Basic Qualification Required:

Completion of all doctoral degree requirements except the dissertation or equivalent in forestry, ecology and economics at the time of application.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent foreign degree required by start date.
  • Strong analytical, computing and GIS skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred qualifications:

Successful applicants will have a strong background in existing economic and ecological theory, as well as systems-based modeling approaches to aid in the production of two outputs: (i) a synthetic assessment of sustainable bioenergy production from North American forests, (ii) case studies revealing regional differences in constraints and opportunities for forest-sourced bioenergy feedstocks.

Annual Salary Range:

$42,000 – $49,128 depending on experience.
