Advice to Grow By Workshop - Summer Pruning

By Andrea Peck   Master Gardener

You may be aware that your deciduous fruit trees need to be pruned, but you may not know that twice-a-year pruning is as important to your tree as personal grooming is to you. At its best, pruning is a three-dimensional art form. At its worst, it may bring up buried memories of that bad haircut you received from Aunt June when you were a child. Pruning, though often overlooked, is an important element of tree care. A properly pruned tree is healthier and easier to manage. Fruit is more accessible and the harvest more bountiful.

This week's Advice to Grow by Workshop focuses on one of those gardening blind spots: summer pruning of deciduous fruit trees. This will be a great workshop to attend if you would like to learn why pruning is necessary and how to go about pruning your trees gone wild. This workshop is not to be missed. The initial 45 minutes will be an interactive lecture with a question and answer period. The second hour will be an actual pruning demonstration that will occur in the garden orchard onsite. Audience members will divide into groups in order to watch each tree being pruned. At the close of this workshop you will know how to prune, what type of tools you may need and how to handle problems as they occur.

The workshop will be held this Saturday, June 21st from 10 am to 12 pm at The Garden of the Seven Sisters located at 2156 Sierra Way. Dress comfortably, bring sunscreen and water, and please park in the lot adjacent to the demonstration garden. Most of all, enjoy!

ATTENTION! The Drought Tolerant Plant Sale is scheduled to follow our Advice to Grow By Workshop from 12 pm to 2 pm. Join us at the Garden of the Seven Sisters, 2156 Sierra Way, San Luis Obispo. We will feature numerous drought tolerant plants including California natives, succulents, and Mediterranean climate plants. Master Gardeners will be available to answer plant questions. See you in the garden!
