A previous blog post advertised the Nutrient Management Alternatives meeting for later this month, but given the weather conditions and the high likelihood that the field and the parking around the field will likely still be wet, the meeting has been moved to Tuesday April 18th, 2023.
Join us next month (Tuesday April 18, 2023, previously March 22, 2023, rescheduled due to wet field conditions) from 8:40 until 10:30 for some quick updates on research. The field site is an experimental trial run by Cameron Pittelkow evaluating the use of digestate and hydrolysate as a N source in small grains.

Nitrogen (N) management in small grains has recently managed to capture more attention than usual due to the high cost of N fertilizers. Several researchers from UC and UCCE have been working on projects that can provide growers with some valuable information on various N management options.

The heavy rains have stopped a lot of growers from getting into their wheat fields, and growers may be wondering what the best move is given the break in the weather. Our forecast for rain in the next 10 days looks spotty, and that has some implications for both nitrogen and herbicide management in small grains.
Nitrogen (N) management.
Studies and experience indicate that in-season applications of N provide a much better response to fertilizer than preseason applications. In years such as this, that is more likely the case because heavy early-season rainfall reduces the amount of plant available N in the root zone. Growers may be...

With all the rain we're having at the moment, irrigation is likely the last thing on growers' minds, but it's not a bad idea to get an irrigation evaluation scheduled for springtime. Dry conditions can develop relatively quickly in our area and irrigation technicians are already starting to build schedules for what inevitably becomes a busy spring.
Growers looking to test their systems should utilize the resources being offered by the Yolo and Solano County RCDs.
Conor Higgins recently joined Yolo County RCD, but is also able to serve growers in Colusa, Sutter, and Yuba counties. Conor is available to assist with pressure testing, flow testing, distribution uniformity, pump efficiency tests...
