I am a duck hunter in northern California and have a duck blind in the rice fields. This upcoming season the fields we hunt are fallow full of velvet leaf weeds. These fields will be flooded this fall with water around November 1st. Do you know if waterfowl find this weed attractive to them? Is this a food source for them? Or do they want nothing to do with this weed?

Hi Tim,
I wasn't able to find any specific information about velvetleaf seed and ducks. But, a few online sources indicate that the seeds are eaten by people. The seed has about 17% protein and 16% fat so there is probably a fair bit of feed value for waterfowl as well. (that all came up in a google search for "feed value of abutilon theophrasti seed"). Now, whether ducks prefer velvetleaf to rice or other weeds that may be present in a rice field is a whole other question... Happy hunting. Brad
