The scientists are baffled because in my opinion they have misdiagnosed the disease. Firstly there is no definitive proof that it is non-native, secondly the pathogen produces abundant resting spores. How do they know it originated in nurseries and not the other way around. Many nurseries feel that their nursery stock was infected by diseased forest trees. Also, forest health is the real question here, our forests are not healthy for a variety of reasons. Weak trees are more susceptible to insects and diseases. It appears the scientists cannot see the forest for the trees.
