Toni (Greer) gave my grandson, Tyler, some green bean seeds in the spring. He was very excited, so we made him a little 4' x4' planter while the seeds were sprouting in the seed tray. He was amazed every day by how fast they came up and got big enough to plant in his garden.
It took several talks to convince him that we could not expect to duplicate a "Jack and the Beanstalk" storyline. This kid has a great imagination! We watched and marveled at the tendrils growing up the sticks. We checked out the flowers. We inspected the flowers. We were excited when little bitty green beans started showing up.
THEN...
I left for Vietnam for 3 weeks. We had talked about how to know if the beans were getting ready to pick. We asked his mom to watch them, and most importantly, to water them.
THEN...
We had a FaceTime chat. It seemed that the beans went from ready to pop open and dropping beans out. Oh well, still a learning situation. The beans are still producing nicely, so I picked a whole bunch and made them with dinner. I also picked a done one to show him how to get the beans out to save for next year. I can say for sure that there will be quite a few seeds to plant next spring. There will probably be quite a few volunteer plants as well.
Oh yes, to answer the question you must have....... NO, he wouldn't even try one bite!
