Around mid-summer and still now as summer is coming to an end, my favorite fruit is still in its glory. In late July our glorious local nectarines and peaches start filling the booths at the Vallejo Farmer's Market. As far back as I can remember these fruits have been my favorites to eat out of hand. They go on my shopping list each week in August as even the local grocery store fruit is quite acceptable. When I buy nectarines and/or peaches the fruit is most often a little unripe but I leave them out a few days on the countertop and they ripen to a juicy and tasty, even healthy treat. Once they ripen I move them to the fridge until I am ready to enjoy. The cooler temperature in the fridge slows down the ripening process enough so I can space out my enjoyment of these wonders of summer.
Both peaches and nectarines contain vitamin A and C, potassium and are a good source of fiber. At about 70 calories for large peaches, they are a very satisfying snack or side dish. I slice them up to add to salads and alongside a piece of fish or chicken. This summer I've been chopping either and adding to my salsa which is especially good as a sweet and spicy side dish for pork.
So pull off the road the next time you see a roadside stand this summer or check out your local farmer's market and load up on these delectable treats, enjoy.
