Interesting blog Scott. I wonder if just because this area is so unproductive and hard to even walk in, hard to spray & cultivate if this is just an accumulation of a massive weed seedbank? Maybe the soil chemistry is having some effect on weed seed and no crop competition. Seems like most likely explanation is that the grower just doesn't see the value in managing this ugly section of the field. Thanks for sharing.

That's a big alkali hole! My father-in-law has been managing alkali spots on his ranch for the past 50-years by adding gypsum, or lime+sulphur every 2-3 years, and now compost. It's really helped improve the soil and plant growth; but still, by the end of a tomato season, you can see some stress on the tomatoes and pick out those alkali spots, so we have to be on it all the time with continually adding soil amendments.
