For plants trying to ensure growth, cedar mulch is good; generally, you want composted mulch. Utilizing wood shavings is acceptable as long as you are aware that they will compete for nitrogen fixation and add supplements as necessary. Only sufficient mulch should be applied to completely cover the soil.
