One important point I don't see mentioned is the contribution of birds eating and defecating the berries and seeds leads to spread of this weed. Generally you will find clumps of Poke weed below areas where birds roost. If nothing else berries should not be allowed to mature.

An alternative to flame weeding may be the Foamstream (steam plus foamer) that was demo'd last November in SJC. It does kill the plant and can kill the flowers/seeds above ground when applied directly for a minute or so. Wouldn't it be a tool to add to the filed trials???

Hi Stephen, Seed dispersal via birds was mentioned briefly in the second paragraph. That explains why pokeweed is commonly found under power lines and fences, where birds usually roost.

Alicia Lewis-Rikkonen,
I have started some studies using mechanical strategies and non-synthetic herbicides. However, I am seeking funding and collaboration to explore other alternatives, such as thermal methods (steam, flaming, foamer), Electric Weed Control, etc.
