There are over 700 varities of Eucalyptus , which is native to Australia. The name is derived from the ancient greek work ‘good'. The first collection of eucalyptus was found as early as 1770. The most widely distributed throughout Australia is E. camaldulensis and can live for at least 100 years, if not longer. If you would like to grow it, it is easily planted by seed. Once established they require no water. They are all classified as members of the Myrtaceae family, which are known for having oil glands all over them. The 2 types of Eucalyptus used for essential oils are E. globules, E. radiata, and another shrub called Corymbia citriodora (lemon gum-not Eucalyptus). The E. globulus is used for industrial solvents, antiseptics, deodorizing, cough drops, and toothpaste. The E. globulus has the largest population of Euc's planted in California, which has been used to replace the California coast oak. Another popular use of Euc's has been seen in popularity in the floral industry. I personally use a variety of different species in bouquets. Most popular are E. nicholii, Willow euc., E. moorei, feather euc., E. glaucesens, spiral euc., E. cinerea, silver dollar euc., E. gunnii, cider gum, E. populus, seeded euc., and E. parvifolia. I love working with all styles, and find it is very hardy and beautiful!
