Roles

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you request/are assigned an intern:

  • Meet with your intern 24 hours before class or event. If you can not meet in person, send an email with the following information.
    • Logistics: Time and place to meet, directions, etc.
    • Lesson plan: lesson, lesson schedule, audience.
    • Special notes to consider: lunches, weather, specific attire.
  • Classroom management
    • Provide you interns with tips and tricks to get classrooms in order and ready to learn. You are still the lead in each classroom, assess the situation and jump in when you feel appropriate.
    • Do some schools/classes have ways to get students attention? Let your intern know.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to interns.
    • Interns come in with different backgrounds and different experiences. Some might have more experiences teaching than others; be flexible.

Don't forget to introduce them!

  • In a classroom: Ask the intern what name they would like to go by. Introduce them as a guest teacher. You can also ask the intern to introduce themselves to the class. Ask students if they know what dietetics means; then have intern explain what it means. (1-3 minutes)
  • In adult settings. Introduce intern and let your class know what role they will be playing in the class that day. You may also let the intern introduce themselves.
