Reasons to Compost - Detailed
Composting Saves Money
Composting can save money in a number of ways.
First, many of the items that might be disposed of as trash—many kinds of yard, household, and kitchen waste—can be utilized in the composting process. This means less trash to be hauled away by private or municipal waste companies and less expense. Less waste could also mean fewer landfills will be needed, which also saves money.
Additionally, compost is a high quality soil amendment which can be used to improve soil quality and plant growth, eliminating the need to purchase expensive commercial soil amendments and fertilizers. Compost is full of natural nutrients—a natural fertilizer that can be made at a very low cost utilizing things that would otherwise be thrown away.
When compost is spread under plants, it can also function as a weed suppressant. This could eliminate the need to purchase commercial weed killing products for the garden and additional savings are to be had here.
Let’s not forget that compost used as mulch helps soil retain moisture; plants will need to be watered less often and there will be less runoff. The application of less water means a monetary savings for those who purchase metered water.
Finally, the use of compost can improve the root structure and the overall health of the plant itself, increasing the chances that the plant will thrive. This can mean a savings of money in that plants won’t require replacement.
