Moon, Lyons network with tribal colleges and universities at conference

Andy Lyons, program coordinator for the Informatics and GIS Statewide Program (IGIS) and Elizabeth Moon, director of Workplace Inclusion & Belonging, attended the Land-Grant Partners Summit in Denver on Oct. 12-13.

The Land-Grant Partners is an alliance of 1862 land grant universities working to develop collaborations with 1994 Land Grant Institutions, i.e., tribal colleges and universities. The Land-Grant Partners project began in response to the article “Land-grab Universities: Expropriated Indigenous land is the foundation of the land-grant university system,” published in High Country News on March 30, 2020. The article revealed that Native lands were taken to fund the original land-grant institutions.

While they were in Denver, Moon and Lyons were able to attend the first day of the 2023 FALCON Conference (First Americans Land-Grant Consortium), which was held immediately after the Land-Grant Partners Summit.

“We were not formally representing ANR at either of these events,” said Lyons, “but went to listen and learn what other states are doing, in the hopes of joining forces and ultimately connecting the many people in ANR trying to deepen our relationships with tribes with colleagues in other states.”

They wrote a short blog post about the two conferences. It's posted on the IGIS blog and Together@Work blog. The story includes an interactive map of land grant colleges and universities. 

The two-year tribal college Deganawidah-Quetzalcoatl University, or D–Q University, is not currently operating in Yolo County. However California Tribal College is administering their program through Woodland Community College.

 

 

Discuss empowering your own professional growth Sept. 13

Join Elizabeth Moon, UCANR Director of Workplace Inclusion and Belonging, for an open conversation on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 9-9:45 a.m. 

The topic of conversation will be “Empowering Your Own Professional Growth.” She will discuss building a plan and engaging leadership.

This event is hosted by the UC ANR Staff Assembly and Diversity Equity and Inclusion councils and is open to everyone in UC ANR. Moon's presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.

Workplace Inclusion and Belonging postcard winners announced

UC ANR colleagues voted and chose their six favorite designs from among the 18 workplace inclusion and belonging postcard designs submitted.

“I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the creativity and artistic abilities of our UC ANR colleagues,” said Elizabeth Moon, director of workplace inclusion and belonging.

“These postcards will be used to help develop our new website focused on the work in Equity Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging, as well as being printed as logo items to provide as gifts to our external partners.”

The postcard contest winners, in random order, are:

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Council appointed

VP Glenda Humiston has appointed 11 ANR people to an initial two-year term as founding members of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Advisory Council for UC Agriculture and Natural Resources. This appointment is effective retroactively from Nov. 1, 2020, through Oct. 31, 2022. 

In a Jan. 29 ANR Update, Humiston wrote:

I am convening this advisory council to support DEI efforts that UC ANR staff and academics have undertaken to improve working environments within UC ANR, as well as to improve quality of life for marginalized populations living in the state of California. Diversity is one of our core values and developing an equitable and inclusive society is one of our public values. This Council is a commitment by UC ANR leadership to take division-wide action on the existence and impact of longstanding discrimination within our Division, as well as in our efforts throughout the state.

I am asking the founding members to recommend a formal charter to document the objectives, organization and functions of the council. While the initial appointment for all founding members is two years, the intent is for members to have staggered appointments to allow for turnover and continuity. I ask that the Council work to develop the Charter and an agenda for an initial meeting with myself, AVP Powers and AVP Tran by June 30, 2021.
