Registration opens for UC ANR Pesticide Policy Trainings

The Office of Pesticide Information and Coordination (OPIC) has opened online registration for its annual UC ANR Pesticide Policy Update Trainings. These trainings are intended for campus, research and extension center, and county-based UC ANR personnel that apply experimental pesticides either on UC property or on cooperators' land. It is important for all personnel handling pesticides in research and demonstration settings to attend this training.

All scheduled UC ANR Pesticide Policy Update Trainings will be conducted via Zoom webinar:

• Friday, April 7, 1-4 p.m.
• Monday, May 8, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
• Tuesday, June 6, 1-4 p.m.

About a week before the training, OPIC will send registered participants an email containing instructions for connecting to the webinar, including the webinar link, password and an electronic copy of the handouts.

Registration is online only: www.ucanr.edu/opic2023. 

Deadline for registration is one week prior to the training. There are no fees for these sessions. Three hours of Laws and Regulations Continuing Education (CE) units will be offered for UC Pesticide Policy Training. If you have any questions, please email OPIC at OPIC@ucanr.edu.

KARE to host Spray Application Short Course Nov 12-14

UC Agriculture and Natural Resources will host its first San Joaquin Valley Spray Application Short Course Nov. 12-14 at the Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Parlier.

Anyone involved with spray application operations including supervisors, vineyard or orchard managers, growers, owners and PCAs are invited to attend this intensive three-day short course on spray application research and extension led by UC Cooperative Extension specialist Peter Larbi.

Registration includes two in-classroom lecture days and one outdoor, hands-on demonstration day as well as materials and meals. The full agenda is at https://ucanr.edu/sites/SJVSprayApplication/Agenda.

Goals/objectives:

·         Teach participants about improving agricultural productivity while reducing the impact of pesticides and other agricultural chemicals on the environment.

·         Share knowledge of best practices for safe, economical, and environmentally sound pesticide spray application.

The price has been reduced to $400. Anyone who registered before Oct. 29 will be reimbursed the difference in cost.

It is important for all personnel handling pesticides in research and demonstration settings to attend this training.

Upcoming training dates and locations:

• March 6, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. – UC Riverside Botanic Gardens Conference Room
• March 19, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. – UC Davis Plant and Environmental Sciences Room 3001. Co-scheduled with respirator fit testing done by EH&S (email mmmaccree@ucanr.edu to schedule). Respirator safety training offered 12:30 pm-1:30 pm
• March 20, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. – Distance training. Register to receive a link to the online training.

Training at UC Davis is co-scheduled with the EH&S Respirator Fit Test. If you plan to be fit tested, contact Malendia Maccree at UC ANR Environmental Health and Safety (mmmaccree@ucanr.edu) to schedule a time for your fit test. 

OPIC can reimburse travel for anyone who needs it.

IPM prof seeks collaborators for pesticide spray research

Christian Nansen, professor in the Department of Entomology and Nematology at UC Davis, is seeking collaborators for integrated pest management research related to pesticide spray applications. 

While working at the University of Western Australia, Nansen, who joined UC in January, developed a smartphone app that can be used to optimize pesticide spray applications. He would like to partner with UC Cooperative Extension specialists and advisors to adapt SnapCard for use by California growers.

“It was developed on the basis of spray nozzles and spray volumes relevant to Australia,” Nansen said. “I would very much appreciate contact with farmers, commodity groups, crop advisers and companies involved in pesticide spraying with an interest in optimizing spray coverage as part of ensuring high performance pesticide applications.”

He is currently finalizing the publication of a research paper describing the regression model behind SnapCard. The free app is available for Android and iOS platforms and can be downloaded from his website http://chrnansen.wix.com/nansen2.
