Underwood and Krause appointed to lead IT and Web Development

I am pleased to announce that David Underwood has been appointed manager of Information Technology Infrastructure and David Krause has been appointed as manager of Web Development and Applications Programming, effective August 1, 2014. Both positions are based in Davis.

Underwood, who has served ANR since 1991, will be responsible for the Division's information processing, operating hardware and software, network communication and data network infrastructures. He and his team will also be responsible for assisting ANR employees with computer services and the help desk function. His customer service focus stands out in his career with the University.

Krause will be responsible for managing the Division's programming and applications development efforts. In 2006, Krause joined ANR's programming team and was promoted in 2010 to supervise the Web Team, which created Collaborative Tools, Master Gardener VMS, Grant Tracking System, Site Builder 2 & 3, Cal Ag online and other Web tools. I look forward to seeing his team improve and expand their support to the Division's Web-centric communications and program delivery mission.

Please join me in wishing Dave Underwood and Dave Krause well in their new positions.

Best regards,

Tu Tran
Associate Vice President, Business Operations

Staff changes in Communication Services and Information Technology

Robert Sams, executive director of Communication Services and Information Technology, has informed me of his intent to retire in June after more than 18 years of service with UC Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

When Bob joined the newly formed Office of Communication Services in December 1995, most people were still reading books and writing letters on paper. The way the world communicates has changed considerably since then. With his rich knowledge about communications technology, Bob has guided ANR's expansion of services from just the venerable printed page and VHS tapes to distributing educational information and services through the Internet via websites, videos, online learning and e-books. ANR and California have benefited from Bob's innovative and visionary thinking.  He has forged fresh communications paths for our future and will be hard to replace.

Over the next few months, Bob will continue to work with me to help implement the first phase of UC Path and to consult with me on the strategy for CSIT going forward.

Karl Krist, information technology manager, will be leaving ANR on March 7 to take a position with Foundation Plant Services at UC Davis.

During his 13 years of serving ANR, Karl has made numerous contributions to the connectivity of the division. He led the creation of the original Site Builder, which greatly simplified the process of building a website and gave all ANR websites continuity and consistency of use and appearance. Today there are over 600 websites using Site Builder, which has been upgraded to include many time-saving functions. Karl has developed several applications used routinely by ANR employees, including Collaborative Tools, Surveys, Datastore, Directory, Portal, FileVault and more. To read more about Karl's ANR career, visit this blog post written by Dave Krause: //ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=12990.

I will begin the recruitment and replacement process for these positions. In the interim, Dave Underwood is leading the IT support team and Dave Krause is leading Web support and application programming.

Please join me in thanking Bob and Karl for their many contributions to ANR.

With much appreciation,

Tu M. Tran
Associate Vice President for Business Operations

ANR Building modular addition project approved

Dear Colleagues,

Last week, Senior VP Dan Dooley approved the initial phase of a project to design, estimate cost, and build a modular building adjacent to the existing ANR Building on Hopkins Road in Davis. The building will house the Research and Extension Centers - Administrative Office (REC-AO), Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), Risk Services, the Statewide IPM Program (IPM), and Communication Services and Information Technology (CSIT).

The need for this facility is driven by a number of factors. First, to reduce facilities costs, UC Davis authorities have been relocating units housed in off-campus leased space to campus facilities. For CSIT, that was going to mean relocation to at least three different structures on campus and the loss of studio, technology infrastructure, and other production facilities. As the lease for the space CSIT currently occupies was to expire late this summer, the need to relocate that unit has been compelling. Additionally, elements of IPM have been in separate locations, one of which is significantly sub-standard.

More importantly, establishing a single location for major administrative, support and programmatic units of ANR will prove essential to improving administrative efficiency and to capitalizing on our new administrative structure and on new common collaborative tools and technologies to support it.

ANR plans to support this project primarily with funds that are restricted to use on capital projects and facilities. Moreover, the planned 18,000 sq ft facility, estimated to cost approximately $2.8 million, will provide a permanent home to key ANR units and, within a relatively short period of time, save both ANR and the UC Davis campus significant lease, improvement, relocation and infrastructure expenses. This project will be funded without impacting current operating budgets and resources, academic recruitments, or funding for our Strategic Initiatives.

While no construction on this project will begin before we have a state budget, we must move ahead with the project planning to be ready when we do. This project will use modular construction technologies that provide functional space at low cost and very short construction times. The UC Davis facilities staff has conducted preliminary analysis of this project and agrees on its potential long-term benefits to both ANR and UCD.

REC-AO, EH&S, Risk Services, IPM, and CSIT will remain in their current locations until they can relocate to the new building projected to be ready by early 2012.

We have long wanted to expand the ANR Building and the current construction economy and significantly improved modular construction technologies make this project possible, affordable and desirable.
