Crucial Conversations training registration opens

The UC ANR Training Coordination Committee is sponsoring “Crucial Conversations” training on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 3­-4, 2015, in Davis. The training will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 3 and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 4.

Training is open to all UC ANR academics, UC ANR staff employees and Cooperative Extension county-paid employees who have not taken the Crucial Conversations training in the past. All expenses related to the training (registration fee, travel, lodging, meals and training materials) will be reimbursed by ANR funds according to UC travel policy.

Twenty (20) participants will be accepted to the training. Individuals selected to participate in the training will need to participate the full period of the training. Therefore, if you cannot commit to the full 14 hours of training, we ask that you not pre-register for the training. 

If you are interested in the training, please pre-register at: http://ucanr.edu/survey/survey.cfm?surveynumber=10326. We also encourage you to inform your supervisor of your interest to participate in this training.

Individuals who have pre-registered will be notified on Oct. 15 as to whether they have been selected to participate in the two-day training. A waiting list will be established for those who are interested but are not selected to participate in the training and they will be contacted if any individuals cancel their registration and space becomes available.

Crucial Conversations provides tools for talking when stakes are high, emotions are strong, and opinions differ.  The objectives of the 14-hour training are to provide the participants tools that will assist the participant in:

• Building greater personal influence and power
• Moving “stuck” work-related relationships and projects forward
• Improving personal, team and unit results
• Reducing stress from team frustrations and blocked communication

ANR leadership thanks Barbara Allen-Diaz

As UC ANR Vice President Barbara Allen-Diaz completes her successful 30+ year career with the University of California, we want to thank her for her contributions to the Division. For several years, the Division has been guided by our Strategic Vision, of which she was a key architect. In bringing the Strategic Vision to life, she initiated the ANR Competitive Grants Program to target resources at critical issues where policy-relevant impacts could be achieved. She also led the development of a thorough process, involving significant internal and external review and input, to identify critical Cooperative Extension Advisor and Specialist positions and made the bold decision to aggressively rebuild the Cooperative Extension footprint across the state.

Her leadership, perhaps best described by UC President Janet Napolitano as “decisiveness with charisma,” resulted in numerous advancements for UC ANR including consolidation of many units into one location on Second Street in Davis; increased direct support for CE positions from several stakeholder/commodity groups; development of two institutes – California Institute of Water Resources and Nutrition Policy Institute; designation of three new statewide programs – Master Food Preservers, California Naturalists, and Informatics and GIS Program; hiring of 90+ Cooperative Extension Specialists and Advisors, with 45+ scheduled to be hired in 2015-2016; among many others. 

She has been cited by many UC stakeholder groups as rebuilding the connection to, and relationship with, them and the University of California throughout the state.

While we focus on thanking her for her leadership accomplishments, her scholarly accomplishments should also be noted.  Perhaps best illustrating her academic impacts are recognition by the Society for Range Management with the Frederic G. Renner Award for her career achievements, and her role in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change where she led the effort to determine climate change impacts on rangeland – an effort that was part of the team who shared in the Nobel Peace Prize.

Barbara is transitioning to a well-deserved retirement and we want to thank her for her tireless efforts in advancing ANR, Cooperative Extension and the Research and Extension Center System, through education and advocacy with leadership and partners within and outside the UC system to position the Division in its rightful place as a valuable statewide arm of the University.

ATTENTION, NEW ANR ACADEMICS! Save the date for programmatic orientation Oct. 27-29

All new ANR academics, please mark your calendars now for the 2015 Programmatic Orientation, which will be held October 27, 28 and 29, 2015, at the Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center.

This orientation is open to all new UC Cooperative Extension advisors, UC Cooperative Extension specialists, academic coordinators, academic administrators and Agricultural Experiment Station faculty.

Join Associate Vice President Bill Frost and our new vice president to discuss the mission of UC ANR and our varied roles in California and the University, and see examples of successful research and outreach programs.  The program will begin at noon on Tuesday, October 27, and end at noon on Thursday, October 29. More details on the agenda and registration will be shared this summer.

In August 2014, 56 new academics (those who had joined ANR since 2009) met at the Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center to engage in discussions with colleagues and learn about the resources of ANR as a division. Evaluations of that orientation were very positive – 4.0 on a scale of 1 to 5.

For new academics who were unable to attend the 2014 workshop, and for those of you who have been hired recently – PLEASE MARK YOU CALENDARS NOW – and plan to join us October 27-29.

Associate Vice President Transition and Provost’s Administrative Review

Dear Colleagues,

Recently, Provost Pitts announced that he is undertaking an administrative review of all areas reporting to the Provost, including ANR. This review continues UCOP efforts to identify opportunities to improve business processes and efficiencies and to make optimal use of consolidated shared services in UC’s Office of the President by eliminating duplication. I have asked Associate Vice President Kay Harrison Taber to provide leadership for our response to this review. Kay’s knowledge of ANR’s unique operations and administrative needs is essential for the completion of this important task.

As you know, AVP Taber has announced her retirement at the end of June. Her extensive knowledge of ANR and UC has been a critical resource to ANR’s leadership team, and she will be sorely missed. While I am proceeding with plans to recruit Kay’s successor, that process will take some time. In order to facilitate a smooth transition and provide Kay with the time she needs to devote to the Provost’s review, I have appointed Chief of Staff Jan Corlett as Interim Associate Vice President. Jan has assumed organizational responsibility for business services in addition to her duties as Chief of Staff.

Corlett named VP chief of staff

I am pleased to announce that Jan Corlett, chief of staff to UC Provost and Executive Vice President Larry Pitts, has accepted the position as my chief of staff. She will join the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) on Dec. 5.

I am thrilled to have Jan join our staff. Serving as executive officer and chief of staff in Academic Affairs, she has already demonstrated her effectiveness at many of the same skills that are needed in ANR.  Jan’s academic credentials are uniquely well-matched to UC ANR’s mission and her professional accomplishments leave no doubt of her immediate contribution to our strategic vision.

As chief of staff, Jan will be responsible for providing leadership and managerial support to the units that report to the vice president, serving as the executive officer for day-to-day administrative ANR issues. She will also provide leadership and support to the strategic initiatives, Academic Senate matters, development of multi-county partnerships and new initiatives. She will join the Executive Working Group as a full member.

Upon request, she will act on my behalf on ANR matters with UC colleagues and external stakeholders.

In other duties, Jan will serve as a senior consultant to me on the development and implementation of strategy for ANR. She will play a key role in establishing overarching objectives for the Division and ensuring the necessary staffing, resources and internal project management to achieve those objectives.

She began her career with UC in 1999 evaluating the California Food and Fiber Futures project for the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and serving as assistant director of the Academic Preparation Programs at UC Davis. In 2002, she moved to UCOP to serve as assistant director of the Early Academic Outreach Program. In 2005, she was tapped to become special assistant to the provost and deputy to the vice provost, and she was promoted to executive officer and chief of staff to the provost in 2009.

Before joining UC, Jan served in the Peace Corps in Upper Volta and worked for PLAN International for 10 years as a field director in Southeast Asia and as the assistant director of the department of international relations for the child-focused development organization.

Jan earned a B.A. in international studies from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and an M.S. in international agricultural development and a Ph.D. in geography from UC Davis.
