The California Tomato Research Institute, a crop improvement association active in supporting a variety of UC activities, appreciates the opportunity to comment on the proposed Vegetable Production Systems Specialist position at UC Davis.
We applaud the University for proposing this proactive approach to supporting CE Advisors with vital continuity at the Specialist level. We understand the need to retire positions along with the individuals, but in the case of this Vegetable Crops Specialist position, the need is well established and the risk of serious program loss is high. Processing tomato has benefitted from and will continue to support the Specialist system. No single UCCE position unifies the Vegetable Crops Workgroup like the Specialist, exemplified by our current lead Vegetable Crops Specialist, Tim Hartz.
One can tick off a long list current and emerging challenges this position will take the lead in coordinating an efficient and effective research and extension program, including soil quality, water management, labor and nutrient management.
Due to the importance and diverse scope of this position in both conventional and organic production, we are hopeful that UC continues to recognize the need for this position by expediting a successful search and placement. While the timing of the comment process is difficult, as it conflicts with seasonal workloads, I expect several stakeholders will comment on the continued need for this key position. Thank you.

I am an organic grower and would benefit from a systems approach to growing. I have my methods, but need to improve. I am not getting the yields that I need or expect.

I strongly support filling this position in a timely manner. Tim Hartz has provided much valuable information and guidance to our farming operation over the years. If California agriculture is to remain economically viable into the future, vegetable crops are going to be very important. We will have to continue to be extremely efficient and innovative to compete in the world market and this position has the ability to address the issues before us. The research and extension portion this position allows UC research results to be disseminated rapidly and fills the need we have to farm in a more efficient and sustainable manner.
