The California Dry Bean Advisory Board would like to offer its support of the proposed UC Davis Department of Plant Sciences position “New Crop Systems and Grain Legumes Specialist”. Dry bean production in California provides a versatile crop that can be grown throughout the state as rotation crop growers can utilize for not only the environmental benefits of nitrogen fixation, but the economic benefits of producing such a cost efficient and nutritional commodity. As mentioned in the justification of the position details lima bean production in California commands a majority of the world’s lima bean supply, but the growing conditions in California also provide great conditions to grow a large percentage of the U.S. blackeye supply and a healthy percentage of the U.S. garbanzo supply. A grain legume specialist such as the one being proposed would be a huge benefit to the bean industry in California.
