The California Tree Nut Research & Extension Planning Group, representing the almond, pistachio, and walnut industries, would like to offer comments on three proposed entomology positions of interest to the Group. These include 064, 093 and 099 (Acarology-Management of mites in crops specialist, Management of arthropod vectors of plant disease specialist, and Orchard Crop entomology specialist, respectively). Each position has merit but given the limited resources and the numerous production research needs of all commodities, the positions would be better combined into no more than two positions that take into account the expertise/experience of current advisors and specialists. For example, a current IPM Farm Advisor at KARE has post-doctoral experience in mites which may reduce the need for an Acarology Specialist. The need for a specialist in arthropod vectors could be better defined – almond leaf scorch is not a high priority issue for the almond industry, no mention was made of plum pox virus which may be aphid transmitted and could have severe impacts when it arrives, and given the potential impact of HLB, a position focused solely on this vector/disease may be considered. The three positions mentioned above, all located at KARE, have been proposed by either UCR or UCD. While we recognize that combining the positions would involve intercampus discussion and cooperation, we urge such discussions.
