Area Agronomic Cropping Systems/Weed Science Advisor - Glenn, Butte and Tehama

These are challenging times for the agricultural world. Technology and science have developed far beyond the imagination of our forefathers. The farmed land is in need of young farmers to feed the growing population. People’s ideas are enlightened by an abundance of informations source. There are ever increasing challenges of food and environmental safety.
The three counties of Tehama, Butte and Glenn produced over 1.6 billion dollars of agricultural commodities in 2012.
The county’s agricultural departments spend a lot of time each year fighting weeds in the counties.
Roadside Spraying, pest management are of great concerns. Local pastures are replacing feed with unpalatable weeds; field crop farmers spend a lot of time and money to reduce weed pressure to increase crop yields. The counties have a great method of keeping track and monitoring herbicide applications. Nevertheless, environmental issues are raised to task when drift from an application goes off target. With the application of scientific principle and research we can work to reduce the effects of pesticides on non-target crops.
Doug Munier was an essential member of our community. His knowledge helped shape the local agricultural landscape. He was of great source of information and experience when the county rewrote a county ordinance to reduce Verticillium infections in our crops. We are currently working with the UC on herbicide drift issues for propanil, regiment and clincher.

Thank you,

Jim Donnelly

The California Dry Bean Advisory Board would like to offer its support of the proposed position “Area Agronomic Cropping Systems/Weed Science Advisory” in the Glenn, Butte and Tehama Counties. The dry bean production in these counties is very versatile where multiple varieties can be grown. Weed control is a large part of a growers program and as regulations change or the herbicide market changes agronomic programs such as the one proposed provide growers critical information.

Glenn County Farm Bureau strongly supports the comments and points made by Jim Donnelly. This position provides a vital resource to the area growers and has been without direct support for some time. Glenn County Farm Bureau representing nearly 800 farming and ranching families strongly encourages this position to be filled.
